About AKABA 

The Alaska Association for Behavior Analysis was created to promote the science and theory of behavior analysis through the support of research, education and practice.

Networking Opportunity

Arrive early and connect with other AKABA members and professionals interested in behavior analysis. We will meet in this location and go to the Rat Lab Tour together. You’ll also get a chance to see part of the UAA campus.

Rat Lab Tour

Drs. Gwen Lupfer and Eric Murphy will lead visitors on a tour covering animal care, data collection, and EAB research at UAA. This is an opportunity to ask questions about animal research and current projects underway.

Behavior Science in Education: The Morningside Model of Generative Instruction

Kathy Fox, Principal of Morningside Academy

Morningside Academy is a lab school in Seattle, Washington that provides opportunities for students to catch up and get ahead. For over 40 years, Morningside has been helping students make two or more years' growth in one academic year. With a foundation of behavior science, a commitment to ongoing learning and professional development and a focus on implementing research or evidence-based curriculum, Morningside has helped countless students reach their full potential. While Morningside functions outside the scope of the most common behavior analytic work in clinics that serve clients with autism, it has remained a constant source of information and training for behavior analysts for over 30 years. Our programming has been used successfully in a variety of schools and clinical settings with a diverse population of learners.Those with an understanding of behavior science are especially well-equipped to bring this programming to more people who will benefit from it. 

The Morningside Model of Generative Instruction (MMGI) includes six key features that help us facilitate the gains our students make. Behavior analysts can incorporate these six features into their programming, both in traditional behavior analytic work and beyond. To support and disseminate the model, Morningside focuses on using the science of behavior to support staff, build community, and manage student and family concerns. This talk will address successes and learning opportunities Morningside has encountered along the way and discuss ways behavior analysts and educators can learn from and apply our work to their own practice.

Inner Behavior

Dr. Abigail Calkin

The theory and practice of inner behavior stem from the beginnings of inductive and analytic thinking and research studies, specifically the works of Pavlov, Skinner, and Lindsley. The first half of the presentation will focus on the foundations that enable us to study accurately the behaviors that occur within a person’s skin. The second half will show 57 years of research into these behaviors that occur inside us.

This is an opportunity to make some new connections in a short amount of time. We will pair up and then switch partners every 5 minutes until everyone has had the opportunity to meet everyone else. Feel free to bring your business cards and your elevator speech so you can share your interests.

After Speed Networking, we’ll continue to keep the room open for casual socializing or the opportunity to spend more time talking with someone you just met.
